Record-Breaking Temperatures Could Top 120 Degrees In Parts Of SoCal Sunday – CBS Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) Record temperatures are expected again on Sunday as a historic heat wave sweeps through California.

The National Weather Service says temperatures won’t cool until Tuesday and even then will stay above normal for the week.

According to the NWS, widespread highs between 105 and 115 degrees were expected on Sunday, which could be above 120 degrees in some areas (including Palm Springs). This added that the risk of fire would remain elevated as the week progressed.

On Saturday, the San Fernando Valley took the brunt of the extreme heat: Woodland Hills hit a record of 118 degrees and Burbank its record of 114 degrees.

“Impressive! This heat is incredible. I mean, it’s scorching,” said Robert Newman, a resident. “I burned a lot of calories today, that’s for sure, and definitely probably drank more water today than I did all week.”

Patricia Windsor, another resident, said she was born and raised in Burbank but had not experienced such warm weather.

Some residents flocked to lakes and parks in search of relief. Lake Balboa in Encino was full of families seeking shelter under trees and others hoping to get a little breeze as they rode the lake in boats.

Restaurants across the valley also reported a slowdown in business due to the heat, including in Burbank, where much of the outdoor seating was expanded due to COVID-19.

“I feel like today, as hot as it was, today was definitely the slowest day I’ve ever worked,” said Natalie Simpson, a server.

The heat wave is expected to continue earlier this week. A list of cooling centers can be found here.

$100K Reward Offered In Search For Lone Gunman In Shooting That Left 2 Deputies Critically Wounded – CBS Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) Authorities on Sunday announced a $ 100,000 reward in connection with the manhunt for a lone gunman responsible for the shooting of two Los Angeles County sheriff deputies in an apparent ambush.

The MPs were shot multiple times while sitting in their patrol car at a Compton tube station. Without provocation, the surveillance video shows the suspect approaching the patrol car and opening fire. The suspect fled on foot. He was only described as a dark-skinned man between the ages of 28 and 30 who wore dark clothing. The MPs could call for help by radio.

Both victims were operated on Saturday evening. They were identified as a 31 year old female substitute and a 24 year old male substitute.

“One is the mother of a 6 year old boy. Your husband is here with you. The other is 24 years old and the parents are here, the girlfriend is here. You’re both not in class 437, ”Sheriff Alex Villanueva said at a press conference, adding that both graduated from academy 14 months ago.

“In fact, I swore them into office 14 months ago,” he said, adding, “these are real people who do a tough job and it just shows the dangers of the job in the blink of an eye.” Villanueva said the attack was “cowardly”.

Shortly after the shooting, the department posted a surveillance video of the shooting on Twitter:

Both MPs were taken to St. Francis Medical Center in Lynwood after the shooting.

“Our deputy was hit at least once in the jaw and at least twice in the arm,” said Ron Hernandez, president of the Association for Los Angeles Deputy Sheriffs. “I think the male proxy was hit in the arm at least a few times too.”

Protesters gathered outside the emergency room, resulting in two arrests, including one of a radio reporter. MEPs say she doesn’t have proper ID. She was released a few hours later.

The LASD thanked others on Sunday evening for their support following the reported ambush.

“We are humble at the tremendous outpouring of love, overwhelming support, and uplifting words and kind actions of the public and our Brothers in Blue, both near and far, for the MPs raided in Compton. We stand firm in the fight against the good fight, “read the tweet.

Anyone with information about the suspect or the crime was asked to contact the Sheriff’s Department Homicide Office at (323) 890-5500. Anonymous tips can be left for LA Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS (8477) at http://lacrimestoppers.org.

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) – For the first time in the US, a robotic fire engine was used on Tuesday to tackle a major emergency fire in downtown Los Angeles.

The fire broke out in a textile store and spread to an adjacent building. More than 130 firefighters put out the flames, preventing them from spreading any further.

October 13, 2020. (CBSLA)

The major alarm fire broke out in a one-story building on the 800 block of South Crocker Street before 4:45 a.m.

The crews arrived on site and found that the building contained “stacks of rolled textiles,” reports the LA Fire Department. The textiles served as fuel to spread the flames and prompted the fire department to declare a fire with a higher alarm.

“What we have in us is an abundance of rolled goods, fabrics and textiles that smolder and are piled very high,” said LAFD Captain Erik Scott.

The fire was initially brought under control within about 40 minutes. However, there was a flare-up on the northwest side of the building that forced LAFD to bring in more crews.

“That actually took off and was very persistent,” said Scott. “We’ve called in waves of additional firefighters to help.”

The fire then jumped to a second building to the east, where it ripped through the roof, forcing firefighters to take a defensive position.

According to Margaret Stewart of the Los Angeles Fire Department, a “robotic fire engine” was used during the fire.

Known as the RS3, the vehicle is a Textron remote-controlled, rail-mounted robot that was used in that fire to clear debris from the structure “to allow a more effective attack on the fire while avoiding firefighters deploying in Danger, ”said Stewart.

The RS3 was purchased by the LAFD Foundation and donated to the department. That was the first time a robotic fire engine was deployed in the country, Stewart said.

It took 130 firefighters about four hours to finally put down the fire. The owners and employees of around a dozen companies in the two buildings in the city center were waiting to see if anything inside could be salvaged.

There are many homeless camps nearby, but firefighters don’t believe any of their residents have been injured.

A firefighter was rushed to hospital with a heat-related illness, the fire department said. There were no other injuries.

LA Gun Stores See Spike In Business After Capitol Riot – CBS Los Angeles

BURBANK (CBSLA) Arms stores in the Los Angeles area saw sales soar after the violent break-in of the U.S. Capitol building on Wednesday.

Redstone Firearms in Burbank, California, January 7, 2020. (CBSLA)

Several arms stores in the region saw an increase in first-time buyers. Redstone Firearms in Burbank told CBSLA that the number of people who want to buy a gun, take safety classes and shoot at its range has suddenly increased by 40%.

“All of a sudden, text messages, phone calls, and emails skyrocketed,” Geneva Solomon, co-owner of Redstone Firearms, told CBSLA on Thursday, an influx of business we wouldn’t normally see on a Thursday. “

Arms manufacturers also benefit. Smith & Wesson shares rose 18% on Wednesday after the Capitol was locked.

Overall gun sales have increased significantly since the coronavirus pandemic began. US arms sales set a record for 2020.

The National Shooting Sports Foundation found that 17.2 million background checks had already been done as of October, two months from the end, which CBS News said shattered the previous record of 15.7 million in 2016.

Kimberly Bailey, a first-time gun buyer, said she was nervous about the purchase.

“It’s a little scary, but I think it’s very necessary to do this now,” Bailey said, adding that the safety of herself and her elderly mother is paramount.

“It only has one nail on it,” she said of the attack on the Capitol. “It’s something I always knew we had to do, but yesterday I kind of said, ‘Let’s go.'”

Bailey says that while buying a new one gives her a sense of security, she hopes the only place she needs to fire is in range.

“The biggest worry is just knowing that you’re protected. You’re hoping you never have to use anything, of course, but you just want to know that you’re feeling fine,” Bailey said.

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) – Two women were shot dead at a camp party in southern Los Angeles, authorities said.

Investigators said the women were at a large gathering overnight when the incidents took place on S. Hill Street and West 32nd Street.

Before Sunday, 2 a.m., the authorities received the first gun call. When they arrived, they found a large group of people at the scene.

One of the victims was found on the sidewalk near the camp, while the second victim was pronounced dead in the camp.

Police said both women appear to be in their 20s or early 30s.

“At this point we are editing the scene,” said Lt. Ryan Rabbett from the LAPD. “We explored the area and found cameras. We spoke to witnesses. And right now, the detectives are continuing their efforts to process this scene. “A description of the suspect or suspects was not available.

According to witnesses, at least one of the women was approached by the shooter on foot before she was killed.

A motive for the shootings remained unknown.

“We don’t know exactly what the event was for, but there were a lot of people here,” said Rabbett.

Investigators say there are several surveillance cameras on the street that hopefully will help them find out what happened and although some people have stayed they believe there are more witnesses.

It’s not clear how many shooters there were, but police believe the incident either started indoors and was buried outdoors, or vice versa. Numerous rounds were fired at both locations.

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) – Local civil rights activists are calling on police to arrest a Southland woman who allegedly falsely accused a black teenager of stealing her iPhone.

The incident occurred on December 26th and was videotaped in a New York hotel. The police did not release the woman’s name, but various media reports indicate that she is a 22-year-old Sun Valley woman.

The cell phone video shows the woman chasing and attacking the boy. His family wants the woman to be charged with assault.

Local civil rights activists agree.

“You have a young woman who was identified as a racially motivated attacker in a cell phone attack in New York,” said Earl Ofari Hutchinson, president of the LA Urban Policy Roundtable. “She needs to be arrested, extradited and prosecuted, and this was a racially motivated attack. Make no mistake. “

This woman actually got off her iPhone in an Uber ride. This driver gave it back to her a short time later.

The teenager is the son of Grammy-winning artist Keyon Harrold.
