Thomas Barrack, a billionaire friend of former President Donald Trump, who oversaw the fund for his inauguration, has been arrested on charges involving illegal foreign lobbying and obstruction of justice, the U.S. Department of Justice said on Tuesday.

Barrack is accused of illegally protecting the interests of the United Arab Emirates in the United States. He also allegedly lied to FBI agents during an interview about his relationship with the UAE.

Barrack, 74, is a longtime ally of Mr. Trump and the founder of the large investment firm Colony Capital. Barrack resigned as chief executive of Colony Capital in 2020. In April, he resigned as chief executive of the firm. / voa
