Officials in Bulgaria said they would ease some measures to curb the coronavirus, due to a drop in the number of new positive cases and hospitalizations.

The country’s Ministry of Health said that, from next week, schools and universities will be reopened, as well as shopping malls.

Restaurants will also be able to serve indoors.

Bulgarian Education Minister Krassimir Valchev said about 26 per cent of school teachers had been vaccinated.

Bulgaria, as of April 8, has reported more than 364,000 cases of coronavirus and over 14,000 deaths.

Hungary, on the other hand, announced today that it will postpone the planned reopening of high schools until mid-May, due to the epidemiological situation.

Prime Minister Viktor Orban said the reopening had been postponed for three weeks, until May 10th.

This follows requests from parents and teachers for a slower approach to mitigation measures.

The Teachers’ Union said on Thursday it did not believe Hungary was ready to send students back to class.

This country started the gradual reopening of the economy on April 7th.

The number of daily cases of coronavirus there has begun to fall behind the peak reached on March 26 of 11,265 infected.

In total, Hungary has registered over 705,000 cases of coronavirus and nearly 23,000 victims. / rel

Rising COVID-19 rates today forced the Swiss government to pull out of plans to ease blockade measures in the coming days.

“The epidemiological situation no longer allows the government to lift exit restrictions or start businesses,” said Health Minister Alain Berset.

Instead, the only change planned would be to allow 10 people, out of five in advance, to gather inside for private events.

“Please be a little more patient,” Berset told restaurants and event organizers, who are pushing for the restrictions to be lifted so they can resume activities.

The decision, whether to allow outdoor dining in restaurants or lift restrictions on cultural events and sporting activities, will now come in mid-April.

The government’s hope is that by then vaccination will have progressed.
