China and Russia have announced plans to build a lunar space station.
Russia’s Roskosmos space agency has said it has signed an agreement with China’s National Space Administration to conduct research on the moon’s surface, orbit or both.
The statement from the two countries said that the station would be accessible for use by other nations.
The news comes as Russia prepares to mark the 60th anniversary of a man flying into space.
The International Science Station on the Moon will conduct a host of scientific research, including the analysis of the Moon, the statement said.
“China and Russia will use the experience gained in space science, research and the use of space equipment and technology to develop a blueprint for the construction of the International Lunar Station,” the statement said.
It also mentioned that Russia and China will cooperate in the planning, design, development and operation of the research station.
Russia, which is known for space exploration, lost its monopoly on sending astronauts to the International Space Station last year, following the successful launch of the SpaceX spacecraft from US soil.
The United States has announced plans to return to the Moon in 2024.
The American program, called Artemis, aims to send a man and a woman to the surface of the Moon, which would then mark the first time humans have been sent to the Moon since 1972./rel
