Greece has recently inaugurated a new refugee camp, which can accommodate up to 3,000 people, to cope with the influx of Afghans fleeing their country as a result of the Taliban.

The EU-funded camp, which opened on the island of Samos, is the first of five similar facilities to be opened on other Greek islands in the coming months.

Private security forces will patrol the perimeter of the reception center which will be protected by steel fences and barbed wire.

Thousands of refugees will be accommodated in 6-bed rooms and will have the opportunity to use the facilities in the camp.

The first 450 asylum seekers currently residing in another camp will be housed in the new facility on Monday, after Greek ministers assessed their new camp as modern and safe. / A2

Albania ready to host thousands of Afghans

Albanian Foreign Minister Olta Xhaçka said her country is ready to shelter thousands of Afghans, who are being evacuated from Afghanistan after the Taliban take over the country.

“During the meeting of NATO foreign ministers, we discussed the situation in Afghanistan.

Albania is ready to host thousands of Afghans. This is a challenge for NATO.

“If Albania can do such a thing, why shouldn’t others do the same,” she wrote on Twitter.

Minister Xhaçka said that sheltering Afghans is an “obligation” as they have worked with NATO forces.

“We can and should help.

“This has to do with the future of NATO as much as it is a humanitarian mission,” she said.

NATO foreign ministers, after the meeting held on August 20, call on the Taliban to facilitate the safe evacuation of thousands of Afghans and foreign nationals from Afghanistan, REL reports.

There have recently been reports that Taliban militants are blocking people from reaching Kabul airport, from where Afghans and foreign nationals are being evacuated by fighter jets.

Albania is awaiting the arrival of the first group of Afghans, who will be housed temporarily until they have the necessary documentation to relocate to the United States.

Both Kosovo and Northern Macedonia have also expressed their readiness to shelter Afghans who have cooperated with US forces.

On August 15, the Taliban took control of Kabul after taking control of most of the country’s provinces for a week.

The militants have vowed to want a comprehensive government based on the principles of Islam.

They have also said they will not retaliate against Afghans who have worked with foreign forces or for the previous Afghan government.

The US-led international troops have until August 31 to leave Afghanistan.

But US President Joe Biden has said US troops could stay beyond that date until all Americans are evacuated from Afghanistan.

Northern Macedonia will temporarily house 450 Afghans

Northern Macedonia will accept 450 Afghans fleeing the Taliban and shelter them until the US special visa application process is completed.

The men are workers and family members of Afghans who have worked in humanitarian and peacekeeping missions, human rights activists, journalists, translators and students, the Macedonian government said in a statement on August 17th.

Skopje has said it will also accept Afghans “who have supported NATO troops for the past 20 years, including the Army of Northern Macedonia”, which has contributed troops to US-led coalition forces. – in Afghanistan in the period 2002-2008.

A number of transfer operations are currently underway at Kabul International Airport for people who are extremely feared by the Taliban regime.

Most of them worked with the Americans or other NATO countries, as translators or in other roles, during the nearly 20-year war.

Most of the 450 Afghans heading to northern Macedonia are expected to arrive in the country by the end of the week, depending on conditions at Kabul airport, the statement said.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs in Northern Macedonia, Bujar Osmani, has said that the quarantine measure will depend on the vaccination status of these people against the coronavirus.

In addition to northern Macedonia, Kosovo and Albania have also expressed readiness to welcome Afghans fleeing their country.

Authorities in both countries have confirmed that they have discussed with the US authorities their housing, although it is not yet known exactly how many people will be housing them.

The first group of Afghans is expected to arrive in Albania on Wednesday.

Authorities have confirmed that they will be sheltered in Tirana and Durres.

The Taliban claimed victory on August 15 after seizing control of the capital, Kabul, after nearly 20 years of ending the military presence of US-led forces.

The government has fallen and President Ashraf Ghani has fled the country.

His whereabouts are still unknown.

U.S. troops are patrolling Kabul International Airport as desperate residents try to flee the country.

The president of the United States, Joe Biden, has defended his decision to withdraw from Afghanistan, saying that “the mission was never aimed at state-building.”

“I am very saddened by the facts we now face, but I do not regret my decision to end the war in Afghanistan,” Biden said in a speech to the nation on August 16.

“Americans cannot and should not die and fight in a war that Afghans are not ready to fight for themselves,” said President Biden.

According to him, the national interest of the United States in Afghanistan has always been primarily in preventing terrorist attacks.

The US president has said the Afghan government failed to listen to his advice and negotiate a political solution with the Taliban, adding that the collapse of the Afghan government happened much sooner than his administration had expected.

US-led forces ousted the Taliban from power in October 2001.

The Taliban have been harboring Osama bin Laden and other al-Qaeda figures in connection with the September 11 attacks in the United States.

US President Joe Biden has said the US withdrawal is now reasonable, as US forces are assured that Afghanistan will no longer become a base for foreign jihadists to carry out plots against the West. / REL

ë The government wants to open the LaLiga stadiums for the last 4 days

ë The proposal is on the table of the Ministry of Health, and a second option is being considered that would only affect the last two days pic.twitter.com/8ibGnppbsm

Serbia’s COVID-19 vaccination campaign off to a strong start

The comments were made at a presentation in Belgrade and showed the achievements of the Serbian health system in improving services for migrants and refugees with the support of the European Union.

The “Report on the Health of Refugees and Migrants in the WHO European Region” was cited as evidence that the challenges of travel and integration make refugees and migrants more ill than local populations.

The meeting also concluded that once the immediate health needs of refugees and migrants are met, the ability of health professionals to provide culturally sensitive health promotion and prevention services needs to be strengthened.

In Serbia the first steps have been taken to achieve this:

  • Health promotion materials in 6 languages
  • Community workshops attended by 853 migrants and refugees
  • Training in stress management and cultural sensitivity for 350 health professionals

Subsequent workshops and training courses will continue to be organized by the Serbian Ministry of Health.

Does he want a statue too? Trump to host ‘Serbia-Kosovo’ summit in Washington on ominous anniversary — RT Op-ed

The inclusion of the leaders of Serbia and its breakaway province of Kosovo in the White House on the eve of a major anniversary in Serbian (and world) history raises questions about what President Donald Trump is up to in the Balkans.

Richard Grenell has not been the acting director of the National Secret Service or ambassador in Germany for two weeks, but technically he is still Trump’s special envoy for talks between Serbia and Kosovo. In this capacity he announced the meeting scheduled for June 27th.

Belgrade has agreed to temporarily suspend its campaign for countries that have recognized Kosovo to withdraw that recognition, while Pristina has also stopped seeking membership in international organizations. Discussions will focus on economic growth, Grenell said on Monday.

If both sides are not satisfied with the June 27 discussions, they will return to the status quo after leaving Washington. As we have consistently said, we must first make progress in growing economies. This is the focus. I look forward to these discussions. (2/2) https://t.co/r5QLDuC1XI

– Richard Grenell (@RichardGrenell) June 15, 2020

Kosovo is the province of Serbia, which was occupied by NATO peacekeepers in June 1999 after a 78-day war waged by the alliance on behalf of ethnic Albanian rebels. Instead of protecting Serbian sovereignty over the province, as outlined in UN Security Council 1244, which approved the ceasefire, NATO established a provisional Albanian government that declared independence in February 2008. She was recognized by the US and most of its allies. About half of the world’s governments – but not Russia, China or Serbia.

Getting Belgrade to recognize the land grab as legitimate has since been the endgame of any US administration – be it Bill Clinton, George W. Bush or Barack Obama in the White House. But every Serbian government that has put “midwives” in office since the 2000 Color Revolution, including “progressive” President Aleksandar Vucic, has rejected this last move.

Kosovo: a decade of dependence

Grenell’s initiative has two eyebrow-raising things. What is immediately obvious is the date on the eve of June 28th. This is the anniversary of the battle between Serbian princes and the Ottoman Turks in the Kosovo field of 1389. Serbian oral history recalled the event as a combination of martyrdom and tyrannicide. This motivated a young Bosnian Serb student named Gavrilo Princip to assassinate Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary that day in 1914. Vienna used this as a pretext to invade Serbia and started the chain of events that escalated into World War I.

The other curiosity is that while Vucic welcomed the talks, the Albanians are divided. Hashim Thaci, the militant leader who became the “president” of Kosovo, said earlier this month he was confident about the initiative. Albin Kurti, a hard-line union advocate with Albania who was Prime Minister between January and March, has accused Grenell of “having the same stance” on Serbia instead of being an impartial mediator.

If Trump wants to disarm Russia, he shouldn’t recognize Kosovo

Kurti has reportedly argued that Grenell is trying to “accelerate” a deal between Belgrade and Pristina in order to give Trump a foreign policy victory ahead of the 2020 election. He also accused Trump’s envoy of orchestrating the no-confidence vote that ousted him in March. A man named Avdullah Hoti was re-elected Prime Minister on June 3 over Kurti’s objections and will travel to Washington.

Kosovar Albanians may have cause for concern. The economic focus of Grenell’s proposal sounds very much like Trump’s approach to the Israeli-Palestinian “deal of the century,” which the Palestinians overwhelmingly opposed. The current US president is known for defying the longstanding foreign policy consensus. He is not personally involved in the conflict with either side, and may even be somewhat biased against the Albanians as they obsess over erecting statues for Bill and Hillary Clinton, Madeleine Albright, and other prominent Democrats.

Granted, there is a statue of President Bush in Albania too, and former Senator Bob Dole (R-Kansas) has been an advocate of Kosovar Albanians for decades – and still is. The GOP’s Bush and Dole factions, however, are broadly against Trump.

Idolatry a lot? Kosovo honors Clinton, Albright on the 1999 anniversary of the war

In Belgrade, Vucic was repeatedly accused by his nationalist critics of trying to “sell out” Kosovo at the first chance and his defeatist rhetoric did not help him counter this. Unsurprisingly, western-funded liberals complain he hasn’t done it yet and want him to be replaced with someone who does.

Parliamentary elections have been scheduled for June 21, less than a week before the White House meeting and just days before Vucic is due to take part in the Moscow Victory Parade. Vucic’s party is expected to sweep the polls and give him legitimacy for just about anything – maybe even rewrite the constitution, perhaps to give up Kosovo.

Given that none of Trump’s ambitious foreign policy initiatives have so far borne fruit – from North Korea to Venezuela and anything in between – and that the prospects for his re-election may be fatally undermined by a number of recent domestic events, neither Vucic nor Thaci nor Kurti should expect a lot.
