Agreement reached with Turkey - Sweden and Finland open the way to NATO membership

Sauli Niniste spoke after the meeting of the three sides in Madrid on the eve of the beginning of the NATO summit, the Finnish newspaper Helsingin sanomat reported.

“We had a detailed meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Swedish Prime Minister Magdalena Anderson, with the support of NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg,” Ninista said in a statement.

“As a result of that meeting, our foreign ministers signed a memorandum of understanding between our countries, which confirms Turkey’s support for inviting Finland and Sweden to join NATO at this week’s summit in Madrid,” the Finnish president said in a statement.

It is added that concrete steps for the accession of Finland and Sweden to NATO will be agreed among NATO allies in the next two days.

Ankara has blocked the admission of Helsinki and Stockholm to the Alliance, primarily because of their attitude towards the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, which the Turkish authorities consider a terrorist organization.

What Sweden and Finland promised

In the memorandum, Sweden and Finland agreed to investigate and take measures to stop the financing of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party and the recruitment of people for the needs of that organization.

In addition, Finland and Sweden will deal effectively and thoroughly with Turkey’s unresolved requests for the deportation or extradition of terrorism suspects, taking into account the information, evidence and intelligence provided by Turkey, the memorandum said.

The two Nordic countries have also pledged to establish the necessary bilateral legal frameworks to facilitate the process of harmonization with the European Convention on Extradition.

In a memorandum signed by the three countries’ top diplomatic representatives, Finland and Sweden pledged, among other things, to ensure that state regulatory frameworks for arms exports allow for new obligations to allies in line with their NATO status.

Stoltenberg: Sweden and Finland – perhaps the fastest entry into NATO

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg stated that the process of considering the applications of Sweden and Finland for joining the alliance is very fast, which, as he pointed out, should be a signal to Russia that NATO’s doors are open for other countries.

“This is a very obvious signal to Moscow that the doors of NATO are open,” Stoltenberg said at a press conference.

Stoltenberg added that the situation with the applications of Sweden and Finland has become “perhaps the fastest process” in considering the countries’ applications for NATO membership.

Biden and Johnson welcomed the agreement

US President Joe Biden welcomed the agreement reached between Turkey, Sweden and Finland tonight.

“I congratulate Finland, Sweden and Turkey on signing the trilateral memorandum. It is a key step for NATO to invite Finland and Sweden, which will strengthen our alliance and strengthen our collective security and a great way to start the summit,” Biden wrote on Twitter.

The news of reaching an agreement was also welcomed by the British Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

“Fantastic news at the beginning of the NATO summit. The membership of Sweden and Finland will contribute to our great alliance being stronger and safer,” Johnson said in a post on Twitter.

YTB builds bridges between Turkey and Serbia

The Presidency of Turks Abroad and Allied Communities (YTB) is a public body focused on developing relations with communities with historical ties to Turkey and helping to improve relations with Serbia. Through educational, social, cultural and economic projects, the presidency has strengthened bilateral relations between two countries whose history has been intertwined since the Ottoman period.

The YTB already has a growing presence in the Balkans, from Kosovo to Albania, and its educational activities occupy a prominent position in Serbia. With its Türkiye scholarships, the agency offers a large number of students in Serbia higher education in Turkey. Since 2012, the presidency has sponsored Türkiye scholarships for 407 students from Serbia.

The Presidency’s Balkan Youth School project, launched to improve the social, cultural and academic development of related communities in the Balkans, was recently launched in the Sandzak region of Serbia. Hundreds of students in the region, which is heavily populated by ethnic Bosniaks, benefited from the project, which offered educational courses on history, culture, religion, workshops, seminars and conferences. Also in Sandzak, the YTB supported a project to create an intangible cultural inventory of Bosniaks in order to convey the ethnic and regional identity of the community to future generations and to preserve cultural values. The aim of the inventory work is to prepare a database for the benefit of future researchers after field studies and literature research by experts on site.

In the Serbian capital of Belgrade, the YTB, with the support of Professor Mirjana Teodosijevic, has compiled an anthology on the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the Turkology Department at Belgrade University, which has compiled scientific studies, publications, photos and other material on the history of the department.

Most recently, the YTB arranged a trip for 44 Turkish learners to the Turkish cultural center Novi Pazar in the Serbian city of the same name. From June 30th to July 7th, the students were given a tour of Turkey. The center serves the locals as the most important Turkish language teaching location in Novi Pazar.

After losing to the Netherlands with a result of 6: 1, in the framework of the qualifications for the World Cup “Qatar 2022”, Turkey has decided to dismiss the coach, Senol Gunes, writes Zeri.info.

The news of the dismissal of the coach was announced by the Turkish Football Federation, through its official website.

“After the meetings with the coach of our national team, Senol Gunes, it was decided to part ways.”

“We would like to thank our honored teacher Mr. Senol Gunes for his work during his time and for his contributions to Turkish football,” the federation said in a statement.

Otherwise, Gunes, who joined the Turkish national team on June 1, 2019, had 32 matches with Turkey, taking 15 wins, 10 draws and 7 losses in these matches.

However, the poor start to qualifying for the Qatar 2022 World Cup has prompted the Turkish Federation to decide on Gunes’s departure.

The recent 6-1 defeat by the Netherlands is said to have played a major role in the decision of the leaders of the Turkish federation. /Zeri.info

Turkey strengthens border to deter Afghan refugees

Turkey is tightening border security barriers with Iran, largely to prevent the possibility of a large influx of refugees from Afghanistan, reports VOA correspondent Heather Murdoch. However, for many refugees, walls, trenches and barbed wire are more obstacles that they say they have no choice but to face.

Most of these boys and men fled Afghanistan a few weeks ago as the Taliban took control of the country.

To reach Turkey, many of them walked along Iran and passed through barbed wire and trenches.
Some flee as journalists see them, fearing they are police officers who could arrest them and return them to Iran, from where they crossed the border.

“My friend called me and said, ‘The police arrested us, beat us and sent us back to Iran after we arrived in Turkey.’ When people call me from Afghanistan I tell them not to try this way. “It is difficult and dangerous,” said Omar Naseri, an Afghan refugee.

Turkey is also expanding the three-meter-high border wall with Iran, mainly to prevent more refugees from entering.

The Turkish state hosts over 4 million refugees and asylum seekers, more than any other country in the world. Many Turks see this as a burden on the country’s economy.

But the refugees say they chose not to leave the country, their properties and often their families.

Last month, the Taliban took control of Afghanistan, ahead of the planned US withdrawal after 20 years of war.

Across the country, people fled for fear that the group would mistreat and execute civilians as they did in the 1990s for several reasons.

The most at risk are those who worked for the US military, or the Afghan army, which had international support.

Frightened are also Shiite Muslims, or women, who want to work and attend school.

After the Taliban took Kabul, they announced plans to rule Afghanistan in a more moderate way compared to their previous rule.

But after decades of violence and fear, many refugees do not believe the new Taliban government will be less brutal.

“The Taliban invaded my country, there was a war. “We could not live there, so I had to leave,” said Najila, an Afghan refugee.

This boy cut his leg in barbed wire while crossing the border. 20 days later, the wounds are still untreated while he has no disinfectant. The group is hungry and exhausted as it secretly moves from one place to another, a day after escaping capture by police.

They say they cannot seek medical help for fear of arrest.

Other refugees say the wall, barbed wire and trenches are not the most difficult obstacles they face.

“Two or three people approached us with weapons and knives. They threatened us by demanding our things. “If we give it to them, we will suffer because we are left without supplies,” said Saboon, an Afghan refugee.

Most of the refugees VOA spoke to have experienced robbery, beatings, or abductions. But, they say they had no other choice, either to follow this path, or to wait for death at home./VOA
