A million people in Serbia support implementation of Amber Alert system – Serbian Monitor

Director of the Center for Abused and Missing Children, Igor Jurić, said today that more than a million people responded to his call to support a joint action towards introducing the Amber Alert system in Serbia.

In a statement to Tanjug, Jurić said that his expectations were exceeded and that a huge number of people joined the campaign by sharing the hashtag “We want Amber Alert” on social media.

“Yesterday alone, we had over 10.5 million views of the video calling for action. Furthermore, 626,000 people said on their social media profiles that they want that system to come to life in our country”, explained Jurić.

He adds that shows that people are interested in the system being implemented in Serbia, but that that figure does not legally obligate anyone. The relevant law should be first adopted in the Serbian Parliament and for now, there isn’t much interest in that.

He adds that he had very constructive discussions in the Interior Ministry, first with Minister Bratislav Gašić, and then with the ministry’s officials, and that he received encourage promises.

“When I thanked Minister Gašić for his support, he replied that it’s time to stop giving thanks and get down to business, which is a very positive signal,” said Jurić.

Amber Alert or a child abduction emergency alert is a message distributed by a child abduction alert system to ask the public for help in finding abducted children. The system originated in the United States and is named after nine-year-old girl Amber Rene Hagerman, who was abducted and murdered in 1996.
