Greek authorities are continuing to deal with fires on the island of Evia. More than 2,000 people have already been evacuated.
Local officials said parts of the island had already been destroyed until they complained that not enough aid had been sent to put out the fires.
The mayor of Istiaia on the island of Evia, Giannis Kontzias, told local media that, “it is already too late, the area has been destroyed”.
Greece is facing its heaviest heat wave in 30 years. Temperatures have gone up to 45 degrees Celsius (113F).
There have been fires in other parts of Greece in recent days. A fire on the northern outskirts of Athens is said to have been extinguished.
Experts say the heat wave is becoming more probable and extreme due to climate change caused by humans.
Other countries, including Turkey and the Western Balkans, have faced similar situations during this period. / REL
