EU foreign policy chief Joseph Borrell says it is impossible to evacuate all Afghans who worked with foreign forces until August 31 and regrets that US security measures at Kabul airport are hampering business.
In an interview with AFP (French Agency), Josep Borrell said that the problem is access to the airport. US control and security measures are very strict. We protested, we asked them to show more flexibility. “We can not get past our partners.”
The US administration has set August 31 as the deadline for the final withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan and plans to evacuate 30,000 US and Afghan civilians.
“I am mathematically weak. As far as I know, the Americans have not announced that they will stay beyond this date. “But they can change their minds,” said Josep Borrell.
The European delegation in Kabul alone employed 400 Afghans who had to be evacuated with their families. The union has promised to remove them, but to date only 150 have arrived in Spain.
Josep Borrell believes talks with the Taliban are necessary. “If you want to fire your staff, you have to talk to the Taliban,” he said. / tch
