More than 4,000 hectares of forest were destroyed by fire that started Wednesday night in the Corinth regional unit in Greece and spread to the Attica region, west of Athens.
By late Friday hours the situation had improved somewhat, but all firefighters continued to work to extinguish the fires.
Over 450 troops and 123 fire engines, 18 aircraft, a helicopter, and several military units were deployed to save the wildlife.
Meanwhile, several hundred emergency services workers battled large fires involving forests in the Canary Islands on Friday.
Black clouds of smoke rose in the forest in Ariko, the second largest municipality in Tenerife, part of the Spanish island chain.
In Russia, several hundred residents were forced to flee their homes in Khakasia, as floods caused by heavy rains and melting snow still remain problematic in the region.
Russian authorities have made boats available to rescue civilians. / euronewsal
