In 2020, 8,687 marriages were divorced, and the average duration of marriages in Serbia, according to data for last year, was only 13.6 years.

– While men usually get divorced in their early forties, women mostly do it in their late thirties. The average age for entering marriage is around 31 for brides and 34 for the groom. According to their data, we have two divorces per 1,000 inhabitants in Serbia, and divorce lawsuits are mostly initiated by couples without children. The SSO also points out that slightly more than half of the divorced are people with children, in any other case with one child.

The Minister for Family Care and Demography, Ratko Dmitrović, points out that 40% of marriages have been divorced in Belgrade alone in the last 10 years.

– In Serbia, every third marriage did not survive the first decade of marriage! The value and status symbols of today’s man are cars, apartments and branded suits, not children and the spirit of togetherness nurtured by the family. Psychologist Aleksandra Janković also points out that marriages are formed later than it was a few decades ago, so young people live free and alone for a long time.

– The longer they live alone, they get used to being self-sufficient and not sharing too much with someone. Today, partners are expected to provide satisfaction, and not to share the bad sides of life. People find it harder to adapt, so they feel frustrated and do not agree to tolerance. It is increasingly expected that the other side will be in the function of my wishes and needs, and each generation is less and less tolerant and cannot tolerate the restrictions set by the other side – adds Janković.

Today, for the first time in modern history, less than 6.9 million people live in Serbia, according to the data of the Republic Bureau of Statistics. The biggest problem is that fewer babies are born every year, and more and more people die.

Belgrade is the only city that in 2020 recorded a growth in population compared to the previous year, while the largest decline was registered in the Bor district.

– We must encourage families to have more children, for demographic recovery it is necessary for each family to have three or four children. That is the most important topic in this country! President of the Steering Committee of the project “Incentive parenting through play” prof. Dr. Slavica Đukić Dejanović explains that there are several reasons for the fact that every year we have a smaller and smaller number of inhabitants.

– We are an old nation, which is why mortality is high, migrations of inhabitants are also a problem, but also the fact that we have fewer and fewer babies. In 2020, we had as many as 55,000 fewer citizens than in 2019. I think that the coronavirus epidemic also had a very bad effect on the situation and contributed to these devastating numbers. If the epidemic had lasted shorter, I am convinced that the numbers would not have been so alarming – she says and adds:

– Fewer and fewer babies are born. Couples do not decide on offspring or postpone them. Women are increasingly opting to become mothers only in later years. We hoped that the crown would bring us a new baby boom, because we were locked in houses for a long time. And indeed, there were months when a larger number of babies were born, but that was not enough. Serbia needs an average of 2.1 children born, and in our country only 1.5 children are born per married couple! The state is doing everything in its power to fix these numbers and make it easier for parents.

Fewer and fewer babies

The Regional Conference for Raising Awareness on the Unmet Needs of Breast Cancer in Kosovo was held today, organized by the non-governmental organization “Renaissance” in cooperation with “GoldMinds”, in order to raise public awareness on the prevalence of breast cancer in Kosovo and proposing modalities for addressing current challenges.
