Men’s sleep can be negatively affected by the lunar cycle, while women’s sleep remains more regular.
The moon, which has long been studied to find out if it affects our behavior in any way, can really disturb sleep, at least that of men. This is the conclusion of a study conducted by the University of Uppsala in Sweden, which finds, for the first time, that the lunar cycle affects the sleep of men more than women.
From new moon to full moon. “We recorded various data on the overnight sleep of 492 women and 360 men, aged between 22 and 80, living in Uppsala, noting that male quality deteriorated during the nights after the new moon until on a full moon day, while that of women was better, ”explains Christian Benedict, study leader and researcher in the Department of Neuroscience at Uppsala University.
“In particular, men, but not women, showed less sleep efficiency and were less in deep sleep,” he adds.
Why should the lunar cycle affect the quality of sleep? A hypothesis of Swedish researchers relates to the greater sunlight that our satellite, in some of its phases, reflects towards the Earth at the hours in which we usually go to sleep. And if this bothers men’s nights more, it’s because men’s brains may be more sensitive to ambient light than women.
Random results? Some studies have investigated the link between the lunar cycle and sleep quality, but the results are always conflicting. Some report a correlation, others do not. “In these cases the reasons may have been different, for example that some data were random. “Furthermore, we have also considered the chronic problems of insomnia and the severity of obstructive sleep apnea, which involves a reduction in the amount or quality of sleep.”
“The fact remains that the results of our study must also be taken with caution. Even if our observations have established a link between male sleep and the lunar cycle, we still cannot say with certainty that there is indeed a direct link,” Benedict said. . / a2news
