Hamas militants in the Gaza Strip fired several rockets at Jerusalem, further escalating tensions between Israel and the Palestinians.
There were no reports of injuries, although the Israeli parliament was evacuated.
Hamas leaders threatened to attack again after hundreds of Palestinians were injured earlier in the clashes with Israeli police.
Some casualties were reported later, following Israeli attacks on the Islamist group.
Israel says it has killed three Hamas militants.
“We have launched, I repeat, launched an attack on military targets in Gaza,” said Israeli military spokesman Jonathan Conricus.
The Hamas-led Palestinian Ministry of Health in Gaza said nine people – including several children – had died in Israeli attacks.
In recent days, Jerusalem has experienced the worst violence in years.
More than 300 Palestinians were injured in confrontations with Israeli police outside the al-Aqsa mosque on Monday.
Jerusalem is the most sensitive place in the conflict – decades old – between Israel and the Palestinians.
In addition to its religious significance, there are also national claims.
Israel has annexed East Jerusalem and considers the entire city as its capital, although it is not recognized as such by most other countries.
Palestinians, on the other hand, see the eastern half of Jerusalem as the capital of their future state.
