Albania within the Safety Council, the UN votes at this time for the election as a non-permanent member

The UN General Assembly will vote today on 5 new non-permanent members, Albania, Gabon, Ghana, Brazil and the United Arab Emirates.

The election to the Security Council, for the first time after 65 years of membership in the UN, represents a major challenge, but also an excellent opportunity for Albania.

Albania appears in these elections as a consensual candidate of the Group of Eastern European Countries.

The election of Albania as a non-permanent member of the Security Council at the United Nations, which would be one of the greatest achievements in international diplomacy for our country.

The Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, Olta Xhaçka, who is in New York, yesterday was received by the permanent representatives of the 5 member states with the right of veto in the Security Council, with the permanent representatives of those countries for two years will serve in the Council together with Albania, as well as with a number of permanent representatives of other countries.

Minister Xhaçka informed the interlocutors that the Agenda for Women, Peace and Security, human rights, the fight against violent extremism, climate change and the negative impact on security issues, as well as the working methods of the Security Council will be the main priorities of the work of Albania, which also reflect the priorities of the UN.

The election to the Security Council, for the first time after 65 years of membership in the UN, represents a major challenge, but also an excellent opportunity for Albania.

Albania supports this candidacy in the main priorities:

– Respect for women’s rights, as a contribution to lasting peace and security;

Respect for human rights and international law;

-Fight against violent extremism and terrorism;

-Climate change and its links to global security risks;

– Working methods of the Security Council

If confirmed today, Albania will take office in January 2022.

The UN Security Council is one of the most important organs of the United Nations, tasked with maintaining peace and security between nations.
