Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to investigate the deadly clash at a religious festival that left dozens dead.
During a visit to the scene, near Mount Meron, Netanyahu said that serious investigations “will ensure that these types of disasters never happen again.”
At least 45 people were killed and 150 injured at the B’Omer festival, which brought together tens of thousands of Orthodox Jews.
It is still unclear what caused the oppression of the people.
“There have been heartbreaking scenes here. “People who have been oppressed to death, including children,” Netanyahu told reporters.
He said the “terrible catastrophe” was one of the worst in Israel’s history.
Netanyahu also said Sunday would be a day of national mourning.
The collision occurred around 01:00 local time.
According to initial reports, it was caused by the collapse of a structure.
But police sources later told the Haaretz newspaper that the clash started when some people slipped down the stairs and caused dozens of others to fall behind them.
These reports, however, have not been confirmed./REL
