Six issues it’s essential to know in regards to the coronary heart – what pleases it and what hurts it

Professor Dr. Predrag Simić, guest in the Morning Program, announced the activities on the occasion of World Heart Day, and called on all citizens to take the time to get as much information as possible about the health of the strongest muscle in the human body, but also to check their current “heart condition”. He singled out facts that are particularly important for patients suffering from some heart disease in Serbia.

Heart attack, weight, tobacco… – More than 22,000 people experience a heart attack every year, and every fifth patient dies from an acute myocardial infarction. The reasons lie in hypertension, prehypertension, which is present in 46 percent of patients in our country. There are also data on the number of smokers (29 percent of men and 23 percent of women), obesity (more than 57 percent of adults have a weight problem) and the factor of physical inactivity. Even 47 percent of people in Serbia do not engage in adequate physical activities. Quitting tobacco, junk food and increased physical activity can contribute to heart health.

Avoiding cars and elevators – Take a daily walk for at least 30 minutes. If you take the bus to work, get off the stop earlier and continue on foot. Do the same on your way home from work. You don’t always have to use the elevator either. When you get the chance, let go of a faster, more decisive step. A more active lifestyle pleases your heart.

The importance of the genetic code – Genetics is an invariable risk factor for cardiovascular diseases. If someone from your family has had a heart attack, stroke, or a coronary disease, you need to take more care of your heart health compared to people who do not have this genetic predisposition. Statistics say that the risk of getting a heart disease is six times higher if there is such a family history.

Health really comes into the mouth – Since “slightly fattier diet” dominates in Serbia, and over-salted foods and those full of additives are used. Three to four meals a day should contain fruits and vegetables, and cooked food is recommended, bearing in mind that a third of our patients have elevated cholesterol, which they often do not know because it can be an asymptomatic condition in the beginning. Later, unfortunately, illnesses and attacks occur, like “lightning out of the blue”.

Stress and the heart – Stress is very important and can have a so-called destructive power on health. People must protect themselves from stressful situations, they should try to have a good outlook on life, move more and be more active, stop smoking, take care of their diet and quality of life – themselves, because no one else can do it for them .

Age as a factor – In addition to elderly patients suffering from cardiovascular diseases, problems such as high blood pressure occur in the younger population. People over the age of 30-35 must have their blood pressure checked regularly. It is much better to treat hypertension in time and keep the condition under control with drugs. This control means that the systolic (upper) pressure has a value below 130, and the diastolic (lower) – less than 80. The optimal value is 120 to 130 / 70 to 80.
