North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has ordered the military to intervene to help areas hit by recent heavy rains and floods. According to state media reports over a thousand houses were damaged, forcing about 5,000 people to flee. This was reported by the state agency Kcna quoted by the BBC, amid concerns over the economic crisis and food shortages.
Bad weather has added to the food crisis that is getting worse by the day. Agricultural lands have been flooded, crops and crops are being lost, and Kim Jong-un said the country had to face a “tense” food situation in June.
He added that the agricultural sector had failed to meet wheat targets due to last year’s typhoons, which caused floods, and that much will depend on this year’s harvest.
The Central Military Commission of the ruling Labor Party held a meeting Thursday to discuss the situation. Kim did not attend the meeting, but party officials sent a message from him that the military should provide the necessary supplies to the most affected areas. / A2
