Interior Minister Jan Hamacek told the CTK news agency that the army would start building space for 500 hospital beds at the fairgrounds in Prague from Saturday, Reuters reports.

The country with 10.7 million inhabitants has the fastest infection rate in Europe, because the cases doubled only in October, to 139,290. On Wednesday, the Ministry of Health reported 9,544 new cases of kovid-19, which is the highest one-day number so far.

Prime Minister Andrej Babis told reporters that it is necessary to start building additional capacities.

– We don’t have time, the odds are not good. These numbers are catastrophic – Babis said.

The number of hospitalizations rose 161 percent in October to 2,678, with 518 patients in intensive care. The death toll has risen to 1,172, up 75 percent this month.

The rapid increase in cases has burdened hospitals that are turning general wards into kovid-19 units and abolishing non-emergency procedures. The number of hospitalized is six times higher than during the first wave of the virus.
